View a larger image of this mapView a detail image from this mapThe Mendocino Coast, rugged, beautiful and rich in marine life, is a favorite destination for weekenders from the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley and is home to a well educated and eclectic population that generally appreciate small town living amid dramatic natural surroundings. The inland valleys provide a perfect climate for vineyards and country living. The Mendocino Coast map covers the coastline from Shelter Cove just across the Humboldt County line in the north to Gualala beside the Sonoma County line in the south. Towns (or remnants of towns) along the coast include Rockport, Westport, Inglenook, Cleone, Fort Bragg, home-of-the-fishing-fleet Noyo Harbor, Caspar, Mendocino, Little River, Albion, Elk, Manchester, Point Arena, and Anchor Bay. Abundant coastal parks include MacKerricher State Park north of Fort Bragg, Westport-Union Landing State Beach near Westport, Jug Handle State Reserve and Point Cabrillo State Park at Caspar, Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Headlands State Park, and the huge, new Big River State Park surrounding Mendocino, VanDamme State Park at Little River, Navarro River Redwoods State Park and its dramatic Navarro Beach, Greenwood State Beach at Elk, expansive Manchester State Beach, and Schooner Gulch State Beach and its Bowling Ball Beach near Point Arena. One of the North Coast's least known and most remarkable state parks has to be the 7567-acre Sinkyone Wilderness State Park which spans the southern Lost Coast from Usal Beach in the south to Needle Rock and Whale Gulch in the north, hard by the Humboldt County line. Inland towns include Boonville, Philo, Navarro and Yorkville in the Anderson Valley, Comptche near the towering redwoods of Montgomery Woods State Reserve, Branscomb near Admiral Standley State Reserve and the Northern California Coast Range Preserve, Hopland, Ukiah, Willits, Laytonville and Leggett along Highway 101, remote Covelo in Round Valley, a gateway to Mendocino National Forest and the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness (the southwestern corner of which is on this map). Other inland parks and recreation areas include Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area near Leggett, Lake Mendocino and Cow Mountain Recreation Area near Ukiah, Hendy Woods State Park near Philo, Maillard Redwoods State Park near Yorkville. Abundant rivers snake across this map, although they are generally smaller than those on the Humboldt and Del Norte maps: Big River, Noyo River, Ten Mile River, Little River, Albion River, Navarro River, Garcia River and Gualala River all drain to the Mendocino Coast, while farther inland numerous forks of the Eel River drain north to Humboldt and the Russian River flows south through Sonoma County to the reach the Pacific Ocean. The western portion of Mendocino National Forest anchors the eastern edge of this map. Like all the North Coast counties, this map offers a rich and beautiful pastiche of rugged and varied lands. If you're familiar with Bob Lorentzen's Hiker's hip pocket Guide to the Mendocino Coast, this gorgeous map covers virtually all the great places in that book plus inland valleys and rugged wilderness to the east and much more.
