This book tells the intriguing story of Buffalo Bill's first Wild West Show photographer. The Italian photographer Carlo Gentile left his native land at age 21 and traveled around the world, landing in San Francisco in the 1850s.

His trail of adventure took him to British Columbia, back to California, then to Arizona and New Mexico, and finally, Chicago and New York. In Arizona he bought a four-year-old Apache (Yavapai) hostage for $30 and raised him to become a physician, Dr.Carlos Montezuma, Indian rights advocate.
