The Golden Coast
From Big Sur to the Russian River
Jim Caldwell
This gorgeous large-format book presents 61 dramatic landscape paintings by Bay Area artist and architect Jim Caldwell. Printed in Verona. Italy, and beautifully designed by Morris Jackson, the book is filled with colorful, panoramic images of the central California coast: the pristine beaches and rugged cliffs of Big Sur, the golden fields and rolling hills above Stanford University, mountain ridges reflected in the waters of Crystal Springs Reservoir, the sun-dappled coves of the San Mateo coast, majestic oaks and gentle hills near Petaluma and Napa, verdant vineyards in the Napa Valley, and the dramatic meeting of hills, valley and headlands at the mouth of the Russian River. This stunning book is about the beauty and grandeur of our natural world and its ability to sooth our souls. It is a tribute to the golden coast and a celebration of the beautiful landscapes that bless northern California. Caldwell's style, described as semi-impressionist, is literal yet impressionistic, realistic yet romantic.
152 pages, 14-½" x 11-¼", full-color dust jacket, 61 color plates plus 12 full-page, full-color details, full-color end papers of details from other paintings. Printed in Verona, Italy, November 2002. Hardcover.

“Caldwell captures the grandeur of nature as well as its ephemeral beauty. The special character of these panoramic images owes much to the sense of light that unifies land, water and sky. Caldwell's light is active, giving the landscape color, life and drama . . . His artistic sensitivity transforms his scenes into images of lasting significance.” -Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., curator, National Gallery of Art, in the introduction
